January 16, 2019 A student who attends Coventry Elementary school has recently been diagnosed with pertussis. The student is currently doing well. Pertussis, or Whooping Cough, is a very contagious respiratory illness caused by bacteria that is primarily spread when infected people cough or sneeze. The illness starts with cold-like symptoms, progressing to spasms of coughing, often with a “whoop” sound or vomiting after coughing spells. People of all ages can get pertussis. However, infants and other children with no or incomplete immunizations are most at risk for this illness and its serious complications, such as seizures and pneumonia. This is a good time to check your children’s shot records. If your child has a cough, or develops a cough, that lasts more than 7-10 days, please contact your child’s physician and take this letter with you. Pertussis symptoms can last as long as 10 weeks. Those treated with antibiotics continue to be contagious and will need to remain home until completing 5 days of antibiotics. There are many causes of respiratory illnesses in addition to pertussis. Practice good respiratory hygiene and keep your son or daughter home if he or she is ill. Don’t forget to notify the school . As always, remember to wash your hands often to prevent the spread of germs.
