If you encounter an issue with your Chromebook, try these steps first:

*If you see an Aw, Snap! screen, this means the chromebook isn't connected to the internet. Check your WiFi connection or follow the applicable steps below to help get WiFi setup on your chromebook*

My Chromebook doesn’t turn on.

  1. Ensure that the battery is charged by plugging the included power cable into the electrical outlet and the chromebook.
  2. With most models, you should see a light come on on the side of the chromebook to indicate it is charging.
  3. If you do not see this light come on, check the power cable to make sure none of the plugs are loose.
  4. If you still cannot get the chromebook to turn on, disconnect the powercable from the chromebook, and close the lid of the chromebook.
  5. With the lid closed, plug the power cable back into the chromebook and open the lid without pressing any buttons on the chromebook.
  6. If these steps do not solve the issue, try the Google link #1 (in Links on the right-side of this page) to try additional steps officially provided by Google, or click Repair Request Form (in Links on the right-side of this page) to submit a ticket to the Coventry Tech team.

My Chromebook will turn on, but it doesn’t respond when I press keys/touch pad.

  1. Hold down the power and reset buttons for 5 seconds to force the chromebook to reset. (see image below)
  2. The screen may flash as an indication that the chromebook is restarting.
  3. If this works, the chromebook should restart and you will see the typical login screen.
  4. If these steps do not solve the issue, try the Google link #1 (in Links on the right-side of this page) to try additional steps officially provided by Google, or click Repair Request Form (in Links on the right-side of this page) to submit a ticket to the Coventry Tech team.

My Chromebook won’t login to my account.
  1. Chromebooks provided by the school are required to be connected to the internet to be able to sign into the student’s account. The first time you use one at home, make sure you connect to your home WiFi so that the chromebook can save and remember the network for future use.
  2. Check to make sure you are entering the full email address (student’s first name inintial and full last name @coventrycomets.org)
  3. Check to make sure you are connecting to the correct WiFi network by clicking on the Quick Settings Panel (the icon with the clock on it) in the bottom right corner.
How do I connect my Chromebook to WiFi?
  1. Click the Quick Settings Panel (the icon with the clock on it) in the bottom right corner.
  2. On the new window that pops up, click on the WiFi network button towards the top left corner.
  3. Make sure the WiFi service is turned on (the slider to the right should be blue) and a list of WiFi network names should appear.
  4. Select the network you are trying to connect to and enter the password.
  5. The chromebook should then connect to the selected WiFi network and you should now have internet access.
  6. If you have difficulty following these steps, click on Google link #2 to in the Links section on the right.
I am unable to open/install Zoom.
*For all school provided Chromebooks, Zoom is now a pre-installed app. If you do not see Zoom in the task bar at the bottom of the screen, follow the steps below. (9/08/2020)
  1. Restart your chromebook. This will update your device's installed apps.
  2. Ensure your device is still connected to WiFi (you may have to reconnect to your home WiFi network).
  3. Sign into your student account on the Chromebook welcome screen as you normally do.
  4. You should now see the Zoom Icon in the task bar at the bottom of the screen. This means Zoom was successfully installed to your device by Chrome. (see image below)
  5. Try accessing your teacher's Zoom meeting through the invitation link that should be on their Google Classroom's page. *Note: you do not need to click the Zoom icon unless you are trying to access the meeting by manually typing in the meeting ID which would be provided by your teacher*
  6. This is a one time process and may only need to be repeated if a student is given an alternate/loaner chromebook.

Zoom asks for a business account
  1. If Zoom asks for a business account or states it is for internal access only, ignore this window and click on "Sign in with Google" button to the right.
  2. Sign in using your student account information.
  3. Ensure that you select the Join Meeting option or tab. Start Meeting is only used by teachers who are creating a class session.
  4. At this point, you can return to the Zoom meeting invitation link that the teacher has on their classroom page. Clicking this should automatically open the video meeting.
  5. If this does not work, you may need to open Zoom and manually enter the meeting ID (and passcode if included).
